As market forces spread supplier bases even further, the issue of time-critical deliveries is undergoing increasing analysis The expansion of automotive supply chains into Central Europe and beyond is creating an increasingly critical role for emergency logistics specialists. In addition to the traditional role as problem solvers, emergency logistics is now being asked to help with supply chain analysis and contingency planning. At this years Automotive Logistics Central Europe conference, Steve Risby, European Sales Director of Evolution Time Critical, will outline a number of primary issues faced by a geographically dispersed automotive industry and how emergency logistics is becoming increasingly involved proactively at the planning stages of new supply chains. Emergency logistics isn’t just about helicopter drops and couriers racing across continents; it is a growing specialist area that is gaining greater acceptance and kudos within the logistics profession and has been recognised for its ability to take substantial cost out of established supply chains. The move into Central and Eastern Europe has provided many fascinating opportunities for the automotive industry, but it has also thrown up its fair share of challenges. Uppermost in the minds of many logistics managers is the wider geographical spread of suppliers as OEMs seek to economise across many fronts. It has also come to the fore as many OEMs develop progressively leaner manufacturing principals, which, in turn, become more dependent on reliable supply chains. Indeed, Risby will demonstrate within his presentation how Evolution Time Critical used a huge array of transportation and logistics options to ensure time-critical deliveries across the length and breadth of Europe and, in one example, from Scandinavia to Australia. Critical delivery has gone from a distress purchase to an integrated element in the supply chain strategy. As supply chains continue to grow, it will play an even greater role in logistics operations – especially in the automotive industry. Lean-operating principles have been identified as primary business drivers across all industries, but often with an element of trepidation when it comes what could appear to be “cutting things a little too fine”. Confidence can only really be ensured if potential problems have solutions in place before they have even happened.
