Event Announcement, Frankfurt, 12th September 2007
The world’s top young designers will gather for an awards ceremony celebrating student automotive design at Frankfurt’s prestigious Cocoon Club on the 12th of September this year. Now in its fifth year, the Interior Motives Design Awards challenged design students to express their visions of the future for automotive design based on the theme of “Solving the paradox”. The design briefs included designing a vehicle for the older generation, meeting the driving needs for crowded cities, using emerging technology to change the way vehicles move and look, and designing simple vehicles that remain fun and individual.
“We are working very closely with members of the automotive design community to ensure the awards provide an invaluable opportunity for them to meet fresh design talent and see how young designers are approaching the challenges faced by our industry,” says Euan Sey, awards judge and editor of Interior Motives magazine. “This year, we’re very pleased to announce that Volkswagen will be selecting one entrant to receive an internship at its Future Design trendlab in Wolfsburg, Germany.”
The competition has attracted entrants from prestigious design schools and universities from around the world, including the Art Centre College of Design in Pasadena, Coventry University, Royal College of Art and Sweden’s Umeå Institute of Design. Students will compete to win awards in nine categories including best use of technology, best eco design, best use of ambient lighting and best lifestyle interior. All category winners receive $500 and one entry will be chosen as Interior Motives Student Design of the Year, winning a prize of $5000.
“Staying fresh and contemporary while understanding your next generation of customers is always a challenge for the automotive industry” explains Han Hendriks, awards judge and Vice President Marketing & Industrial Design at Johnson Controls. “The Interior Motives Design Awards provide a fascinating forum to glimpse the future of car design and meet some of the people who will be shaping it.”
Guests and judges at the event will have one and a half hours to review exhibits of twenty seven finalist designs followed by the announcement of winners and prize giving. Within each category, the panel of judges will be looking for the design relevance, originality, value and quality of the overall design and it’s potential for development. Previous category winners have gone on to achieve further successes, working for the design groups of Ford of Europe and GM.
The judging panel, made up of senior automotive specialists, includes Li-Chih Fu, chief engineer, Nanjing Automotive Corporation, Han Hendriks, Vice President Marketing & Industrial Design at, Johnson Controls, Jae S Min, assistant chief designer, Design Centre California, Wolfgang Mueller Pietralla, head of future affairs, Volkswagen, and Robin Page, head of interior design, Bentley Motors.
